Storm Season: Get Your Water-Damage Cleaning Response Ready
The Met Office confirms storm-naming season has begun. Here's how Midlands landlords get water-damage cleaning response ready before the next storm hits.
Why water damage cleaning is a race against time, not just volume
The damage from a leak or flood isn't fixed the moment the water stops — it compounds for as long as the affected area stays wet. Carpet and underlay left damp for 48 hours starts to smell. Plasterboard left wet for a week starts to break down. And any wet material left untreated for more than 24–48 hours in the wrong conditions creates the environment mould needs to establish itself, at which point a water-damage clean becomes a mould remediation job as well — a bigger, slower, more expensive piece of work. Speed of response after a storm matters as much as the cleaning itself.
What a proper post-storm response actually involves
- Rapid extraction of standing water from carpets, flooring and hard surfaces
- Industrial dehumidification and air movement to dry out the structure itself, not just visible surfaces
- Sanitising affected areas, particularly where flood water may have carried contaminants
- Removal and safe disposal of anything too saturated to dry out and save
- A follow-up moisture check days later to confirm the area's genuinely dry, not just dry to the touch
Storm damage doesn't arrive on a schedule, and the properties that come through a named storm with the least disruption are the ones whose managers already know who they're calling before the water's even stopped. Arranging a response plan now — a known contact, an agreed rough response time, an understanding of what's covered — means the call after a storm is a two-minute conversation, not a scramble through search results at 11pm while water's still spreading across a shop floor or a communal hallway.
Getting ready before the first warning lands
If you manage rental properties, retail units, offices or communal buildings across the Midlands, this is the moment to get a water-damage response arranged before you need it — not during the first amber warning of the season, when every restoration company in the region is fielding the same calls at once.
